West Coast tourist attractions
More about the jet boat tour and the West Coast tourist attractions.
Here at Waiatoto River Safari, we like to offer additional ways to explore this magnificent area and also suggest our pick of complimentary west coast tourist attractions.
As well as our daily scheduled departures we also offer chartering one of our jet boats, exclusively. We guide your guests and we welcome you to bring your own refreshments. Ideal for that special 50th birthday or a romantic anniversary. The tour follows the river safari and also allows time for your party to enjoy the environment with a stop along the river.
During the safari you will enter the Haast-Tokoeka Kiwi Sanctuary to see and learn about the kiwi bird recovery programme. We suggest you visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre to see the little Kiwis collected from this area, in person. Haast-Tokoeka are one of the most endangered kiwi in the world with around 370 birds remaining, only seen in this tiny part of South Westland.
South-west New Zealand and has been shaped by successive glaciations into fjords, rocky coasts, towering cliffs, lakes and waterfalls. You will be walking in southern beech and podocarps, some of which are over 800 years old. Birds such as the kea, the only alpine parrot in the world, make this forest their home. The playful Tui, curious Fantail, friendly wood pigeon and many other native birds live here.
You will visit the Tasman Sea and also a side tributory that has dripping ferns, reflections and often you will see flounder and the elusive whitebait swimming in the water.
