West Coast tourist attractions

Love nature and want to explore further?  Here are our tips to help you plan your holiday.

Here at Waiatoto River Safari, we like to offer additional ways to explore this magnificent area and also suggest our pick of complimentary west coast tourist attractions.

If you are arriving from the N.I. and passing through Havelock (en-route from Picton to the West Coast) then be sure to take a ride on the Pelorus Mail Boat , a family run business just like us, Jim & Amanda will treat to a really interesting day out.

Okarito is a tiny village north of Franz Josef that is, like us, is off the beaten path.  It is well worth the drive of 13km off the main highway.  There is accomodation and a neat little cafe which is at the Okarito Kayak base.  You may see the White Heron (Kotuku) if you take one of their tours and you may see a white heron on ours too, because the young herons come to our beautiful Hindley Stream to learn to fly during the Summer, before returning to their home base at Okarito.

To see some stunning photography of our area you can visit Andris Apse’s home while visiting Okarito or find his gallery at Franz Josef.  Remember to bring your camera to capture the beauty of the stunning and untouched West Coast.

During the safari you will enter the Haast-Tokoeka Kiwi Sanctuary to see and learn about the kiwi bird recovery programme.  If you are passing Franz Josef, we suggest you visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre to see the little Kiwis collected from this area, in person. Haast-Tokoeka are the most endangered kiwi in the world with around 370 birds remaining, only seen in this tiny part of South Westland.
